Greenfleet is a not-for-profit organisation offering a simple program to reduce the impact of human activities on the environment.  Greenfleet is constantly seeking suitable sites for our reforestation projects.

Greenfleet works closely with catchment management groups, Landcare groups, professional contractors and landholders to establish native, biodiverse forests across Australia on behalf of our individual and business supporters.

Greenfleet's Forests

Greenfleet's forests are made up of a wide variety of native trees that remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere as they grow.

Greenfleet selects species indigenous to each individual planting site, sourcing seed from that region.  We establish permanent biodiverse forests, which help tackle salinity, improve water quality, reduce soil erosion and provide essential habitat for native species, in addition to capturing carbon.

Benefits of partnering with Greenfleet

Greenfleet recognises the value of the land that you make available to us for our forest planting.  Once an agreed initial quantity of carbon is captured by the forests, Greenfleet will provide landholders with a generous share in the rights to the additional carbon that is sequestered by the growing forest.

In addition to this financial benefit, the revegetation of the land will also provide the following benefits:

  • Reduced soil erosion
  • Enhanced micro-climates in the surrounding areas
  • Improved water quality
  • Reduced ground and water salinity
  • Wind protection of arable crops
  • Shelter belts for livestock
  • Wildlife corridors and biodiversity protection

Land and planting requirements

To meet the Kyoto Protocol rules for forest sinks, planting projects must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Land must have been cleared of forest as at 31 December 1989 and unable to regenerate through natural processes
  • Planting area that is a minimum of 0.2 hectares and at least 10 metres wide
  • Trees must be capable of obtaining a height of at least two metres, with a crown cover of at least 20%
  • Land must not be subject to any compulsory rehabilitation / revegetation order

In addition to the minimum criteria above, Greenfleet also looks for:

  • A planting area greater than 10 hectares (this can be a single site, or multiple sites in a local area)
  • A minimum width of 10 metres, with a preference for 30 metres or more
  • Sites with an average annual rainfall of at least 400mm

Carbon Agreements

To ensure that carbon is removed from the atmosphere long term, Greenfleet will establish an agreement with the landholder seeking a commitment to maintain the forest for a minimum of 100 years, with a preference for 'forever' plantings.

The agreement also specifies Greenfleet's and the landholder's rights to the carbon sequestered by the forests in their lifetime.

Upon acceptance of a project the landholder signs an "Interim Agreement".  During the establishment phase forest management plans and mapping are conducted by Greenfleet to feed into the formal Agreement which is then attached to the Title of the property.

The planting project

  1. Greenfleet will research the site to discover the best possible mix of native trees to plant.
  2. Greenfleet will source the seeds or saplings for the planting.
  3. The landholder will generally be responsible for the preparation of the site including soil preparation and weed control.  In some cases Greenfleet can provide some assistance with this stage.
  4. Greenfleet foresters and planting contractors will supply all planting equipment (unless otherwise agreed) and plant the site.
  5. Fencing or tree guards (if required) will be supplied by the landholder.

Maintenance and monitoring

Greenfleet will work with the land manager to establish a suitable maintenance program for each site.  We will also conduct periodic site visits to monitor the survival of the plantings and assess the need for any replanting, to ensure our overall forest pool meets the carbon commitments for our supporters.

The monitoring program consists of:

  1. A survival check at around 6 months post-planting,
  2. An annual check for the next 5 years (establishment period),
  3. A site visit measure every fifth year thereafter.

The land manager is responsible for maintenance of the forest.  Should any event occur that affect the planting the land manager is required to notify Greenfleet and a forester will visit the site to assess and determine any remedial action required.

Greenfleet maintains a database of all forests planted and, in conjunction with the landholder, takes responsibility for their ongoing survival.  We need to track the survival, growth and carbon content of the forests for our supporters and government reporting requirements, and to evaluate their effectiveness in improving the local environment and carbon uptake.  This data will not be sold or traded.
