What is Biosequestration?

Carbon sequestration refers to the process of removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and storing it in another location (called a carbon sink).  Biosequestration is the process of capturing and storing carbon in living organisms such as plants and algae.  This occurs through the natural process of Photosynthesis (explained below).

Through the process of photosynthesis, trees convert carbon dioxide and water
into sugars (and fibre) for growth and release oxygen back into the atmosphere.

Chemistry:

           6 CO₂   +   6 H₂O  +    photons     =>  C₆H₁₂O₆  +   6 O₂
