Sustainability is about living within the capacity of the systems which support us. 

Society, the environment and economy all have boundaries and once we push beyond those boundaries the systems supporting us collapse. 

Individually each system has boundaries, but more importantly they are co-dependent, so sustainability means living within the combined boundaries of all three systems.
