Parramatta City Council believes it has a responsibility to contribute to the protection, conservation and enhancement of the local and global environments. Playing an important leadership role in the community, Council has adopted an Environmental Action Plan and is dedicated to leading the way to a better environment.

Council is working towards reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions through a five-year Climate Action Plan, which sets targets and community actions including reducing emissions by 2025 to 2000 levels, and by 2050 to less than 60 per cent of today's levels.

As part of Council's commitment to meeting its sustainability goals, Council signed up to the Greenfleet program in 2007 for each of the 142 private-use vehicles in its fleet to help offset the CO2 emissions from their use. Council has also introduced gas-powered vehicles, provides financial incentives to staff to choose vehicles with lower emissions and will continue to explore ways to minimise greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
