Volunteers braved the rain to plant native trees

Greenfleet loves nothing more than sharing the great efforts of each and every forest planted around Australia and New Zealand. On the 19th of August our team took a group of volunteers out to Lysterfield National Park to join in on one of our last tree plantings for 2016.

Greenfleet supporters from Disney, Europcar, Global Ballooning, Kings Transport and Telstra traded in their work shirts and city shoes for fluoro vests and gum boots to plant native Australian trees throughout the National Park. There is no such things as bad weather, just bad clothing! The skies opened up and the rain and wind joined in as the planting began but stopped no one in their tracks to plant all 1,800 trees.

Greenfleet and Lysterfield National Park ‘go way back’, all the way to 2005 when the first revegetation project began. Over the course of several years, 10 ha and 21,000 native trees were planted. Kangaroo Apple, Dogwood and Tree Violet are just some of the quirky named trees found through the forest. Don’t let the names fool you, these magnificent trees are creating self-sustaining, multi-species forests restoring the natural ecosystem and guzzling tonnes and tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere.

Lysterfield National Park is a popular destination for the locals around Victoria. Less than an hour from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne City, you are surrounded by the Aussie bush. The outdoor activities are endless; hiking, mountain bike riding and of course the lake for all those aquatic lovers. Not to forget our furry friends, the Lysterfield National Park and particularly the Greenfleet planting sites shelter many birds and kangaroo mobs.

Despite the weather, the volunteers were happy to be outdoors contributing to a positive environmental cause, with one volunteer saying Great day outdoors and the emotional connection of the activity provided an additional bonus”. It is tree planting days like this that provide Greenfleet supporters with a hands on experience of our mission; bringing fresh air, good vibes and a day of positive green restoration. A huge thanks to all involved on the day!

We can’t thank enough all our generous donors and supporters who help Greenfleet restore forests to protect our climate.
