This is why I support Greenfleet

David has been supporting Greenfleet since 1997 and a Board Member since 2005.

When I first heard of the idea of planting trees to offset carbon dioxide emissions from my car, I thought ‘What a great idea, because it’s something I can do at a personal level.’ That was almost 20 years ago.  The late Peter Brock agreed to champion the cause at the opening ceremony, ensuring that Greenfleet was off to a front-of-grid start.

At that time, the average car on Australian roads covered 15,000 km per year and emitted about 4.3 tonnes of CO2.  At that time there was no exact formula for calculating how many trees would be needed to offset that amount of CO2 but we guessed about 20 trees over 20 years of life would do the job.  Greenfleet today uses drones to measure the density of our forest canopies and we have sophisticated software that can assess the rate of CO2 absorption. That way we can be sure of keeping the promise to our supporters – offsetting the greenhouse effect of emissions from using their car.

All those years ago we tried to plant a mix of species that would replicate the original forests of the planning area.  Today, we go further and include the estimated future effect of global warming.

I am so proud to have been involved with Greenfleet for so long and it is a privilege to serve on the board of management.
