6 Ideas for a Forest Friendly Christmas

The festive season is upon us once again! While Christmas is always a fun-filled time of year, it’s not always the most environmentally friendly season. From the extra plastic packaging that your online Christmas shopping arrived in, to unwanted gifts that end up in landfill, Christmas has the potential to cost the planet. But it doesn’t have to! We’ve done some brainstorming to help you have a low-impact Christmas. From unique gift ideas, to catering for your Christmas party, read on to get inspired and have a forest friendly festive season!

1. Plant a forest for your loved ones.

Give the gift of climate hope with a Greenfleet gift this Christmas. As you know, Greenfleet takes practical climate action by planting trees to offset carbon emissions. In 2019, we’re planning to plant more than 200,000 trees across Australia, and with your support, this goal will be within our reach.

A Greenfleet gift is perfect for those hard-to-buy-for relatives, or for your friends who share your passion for protecting the environment. Simply head to: https://www.greenfleet.com.au/xmasgift, select the amount you would like to donate, and fill in the details of the recipient. Then we’ll send a personalised gift certificate to you or your loved one.

2. Give them an unforgettable, ‘green’ experience.

What do you get for the person who has everything? An unforgettable experience with a company who supports the planet of course!

3. Christmas catering that cares.

Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse Christmas cakes

We must admit to overindulging a little at Christmas time, but we can feel a bit less guilty about it when those treats come from a company that protects our environment.

Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses have a delicious range of traditional Christmas treats such as mince pies and Christmas puddings, and as well as yumminess, they’re also committed to sustainability. From packaging to energy efficient bakeries, Ferguson Plarre actively look for ways to reduce their impact, and have planted over 30,000 trees with Greenfleet since 2007.

And for the office drinks? Keep your co-workers refreshed with drinks from Daylesford and Hepburn Mineral Springs Co. Sourced from Victoria’s idyllic Daylesford region, they offer a range of sparkling waters, soft drinks and mixers, many of which are organic, and all of which are delicious. They also minimise their impact by keeping production, bottling, warehousing and packaging as local as possible, and offsetting their fuel emissions with Greenfleet.

5. Deck the halls with plastic-free decorations and reusable wrapping.

Plastic-free Christmas decorations

If you’re in the market for some new decorations this year, go for a plastic-free option. Decorations made from paper or natural fibers can look fantastic and won’t hang around in landfill long after the festivities are over. Best of all, they’re low-cost, and you can even make them yourself! Gather the family together for a Christmas crafternoon and trim your tree with paper chains and coloured pom poms.

Tearing the paper off a gift can definitely be fun, but to protect our environment it’s important to reduce waste whenever possible. So why not wrap your presents furoshiki style this year? Furoshiki is a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, used to wrap clothes, gifts and other goods. You just need some pieces of fabric (you can even recycle scarves or old sheets) and a quick furoshiki tutorial, and you’ll be well on your way to waste-free wrapping! You can re-use your furoshiki cloths next Christmas, and you won’t have to clean up all those scraps of paper on Christmas morning!

6. Support local artists who support our environment.

Eggpicnic Australian artists

Sydney-based design studio Eggpicnic create beautiful prints with a mission in mind: ending wildlife extinction through education and art. Their whole range of colourful and classy prints that will look wonderful on your loved one's walls, but we’re particularly fond of the Marsupials of Australia print. For every copy of Marsupials of Australia sold, Eggpicnic donates to Greenfleet to plant 8 trees.
