Earth Day is a timely reminder of the need to protect our precious Earth. Now, more than ever, we must work together to protect our environment, grow our forests, and support native wildlife.

This Earth Day we reflect on Greenfleet’s 27 years of climate action, as we continue growing native forests to remove carbon from the atmosphere. These forests are protected with an on-title legal agreement for up to 100 years, ensuring a long-term and positive impact.

With the help of our supporters, we are removing carbon, restoring nature, and growing climate hope.

What Is Earth Day?

Earth Day began in the USA in 1970 with public rallies against pollution, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife. Each year, April 22 marks the anniversary of this environmental movement. The day continues to push for better environmental outcomes by uniting people from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic groups.

April 22 also signifies the signing of the Paris Agreement, where 175 world leaders recognising Earth Day as a significant marker of the climate and environmental movement.  Over time, Earth Day has developed into Earth Month, to raise much-need awareness and advocate for change on the major climate issues affecting our planet.

5 Ways Greenfleet Protects Earth

Greenfleet has protected our planet for over a quarter of a century. Since 1997, we have planted more than 11.2 million native trees to revegetate around 11,000 hectares and create over 550 native forests. We legally protect these forests for up to 100 years, and as they grow, they will remove over 5 million tonnes of CO2-e from the atmosphere.

1. Delivering climate action by removing carbon

By planting native biodiverse forests, Greenfleet delivers climate action that protects our environment. While growing ecosystems and removing carbon, we are empowering individuals and companies to manage their carbon removal and make a positive impact.

2. Building wildlife habitat

Greenfleet sources locally native tree and plant species in the regions we revegetate. This helps create and extend habit and encourages native wildlife to utilise our forests for their homes and food.

3. Restoring native ecosystems

Greenfleet’s Revegetation Team research the local ecosystem types at each of our reforestation sites to restore the species that existed prior to land clearing.

By planting locally native plant species we are creating resilient forests that can benefit the environment and wildlife.

4. Improving air and water quality

Climate change contributes to worsening air and water quality. To combat these effects, Greenfleet plants native forests which act as natural air filters absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and releasing oxygen.

5. Empowering individuals and organisations to take action

Understanding the steps you can take to make a positive impact on the environment can help us all feel empowered in the face of the climate crisis.

Earth Day Theme 2025

This year’s Earth Day theme is Our Power, Our Planet – encouraging people worldwide to support the transition to renewable energy. While Greenfleet’s focus is on ecosystem restoration, we know that transitioning to a lower carbon economy is vital for the future of our Earth.

This year, communities are encouraged to educate, advocate and mobilise to replace fossil fuels with renewable resources, combating the rise in pollution generated by non-renewable energy sources.

There are many actions we can all take to reduce our impact and protect our Earth. This Earth Day, we celebrate our supporters that want authentic action to protect the climate and restore nature. It’s thanks to you that we continue to make such a positive impact for Australia’s ecosystems.

Together, we are growing our forests, removing carbon, and restoring nature.
