Are you concerned about your beloved pet’s carbon emissions? Greenfleet now offers a Pet Offset, so you can manage their carbon pawprint and care for our environment.

In Australia, we love pets. In fact, almost 70% of homes own furry friend – one of the highest rates in the world! It's estimated that there are 6.3 million pet dogs and 5.3 million pet cats, with each one creating a carbon footprint, or “pawprint”. Now, there is positive action you can take to reduce those emissions.

Greenfleet created the Pet Offset to give Australians the opportunity to increase sustainability when it comes to pet ownership. Offset your pet and we will plant native trees on their behalf, which will grow into biodiverse, legally protected forests in Australia.

Why Offset Your Pet?

Climate action can take many forms. By understanding that your pet is a contributor to carbon emissions, you can take steps to reduce this environmental impact.

The Pet Offset is designed to create an easy and effective way to offset the emissions associated with owning a pet. Most emissions come from pet food manufacturing, so our Pet Offset is designed to combat these.

When you offset your pet, Greenfleet will plant enough native trees to capture those emissions. We plant native forests in Australia and New Zealand that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, restore native ecosystems, build habitat, and conserve biodiversity.

How The Offset Works

In conjunction with Pangolin Associates, Greenfleet assessed the average carbon emissions created by dogs and cats annually. A small pet emits 0.5 tonnes of CO2-e, a medium-sized pet emits 1.1 tonnes, and a large pet on average emits 2 tonnes.

The tonnes of CO2-e emitted by a pet is mainly determined by their diet. To calculate this pawprint, Greenfleet has taken an average of the carbon tonnes emitted across various types of diet types. This includes pets that are fed diets consisting of red meat, wet food, dry food, raw food or are mixed fed diets as well as wet and dry food.

We have created three simple options with cats and dogs in mind – small, medium and large pet offsets – helping you to manage the emissions of your pet. Each Pet Offset is for one year and you can offset as many pets as you like!

Offsetting your pets’ emissions through native forest revegetation is a cost-effective way to reduce your environmental impact and make a difference for our planet.

Greenfleet’s Ongoing Climate Action

Greenfleet is an environmental not-for-profit organisation and is committed to delivering climate action across Australia and New Zealand. We are Australia’s first carbon offset provider, protecting our climate by restoring native forests since 1997.

Our forests capture carbon emissions on behalf of our supporters and restore biodiversity. As our forest grow they restore climate hope, by helping to fight the impacts of climate change, improving soil and water quality, and restoring habitat for native wildlife.
